Teeth Whitening
This will give a brief synopsis of some of the ways our office recomends whitening your teeth.
ORAL B REMBRANDT WHITE STRIPS These strips are found over the counter for the average price of $35, and we also sell them in office for a fee of $30. They took the idea of the Crest Whitestrips and updated them. They are a thin strip that goes across the teeth. They go further back than Crest strips and mold to the teeth, so those individuals that do not have their teeth in perfect alignment can still whiten with even results. The gel in these strips is "dry" formula. This means that the gel does not ooze out onto the gum tissue during the whitening process. The gel can be irritating to some individuals gums, so this product gets rid of this specific side effect. Everyone is different, but the average person will get 1-2 shades lighter with an over the counter product.
TRES WHITE
Can only be purchased in the office for a fee of $120. This system consists of 10 prefilled trays that one wears for 30-60 minutes a day, 10 days in a row. The tray is inserted into the mouth, the individual will then bite down a few times so that the tray will mold to the teeth. The tray will then be removed, leaving a thin strip on the teeth. This strip is what is worn for the 30-60 minutes. The gel comes in two different flavors, mint and melon. It is possible that you may be happy with the results after 4 or 6 trays, and the rest of the trays can then be saved for a touch up session in the future. The gel will stay good as long as it is kept in the refridgerator for up to 2 years. Just make sure that before using again, you take the trays out and let them come down to room temperature before using. This is an extremely popular system for the resutls are great, and it isn't to expensive. The average person will whiten up to 5 shades.
CUSTOM MADE TRAYS
This systems can only be purchased in the office for a fee of $350. The patient will come to the office and have a very detailed impression taken of their teeth. This impression is then sent off to a lab, and then later returened with trays that only fit that specific mouth. The trays are then filled with syringes of gel, and work over night. The average person will wear these trays for 10-14 days, depending on results that are desired. The syringes of gel come in a concentration of 20% and 15%. The result can be obtained with both concentrations, one would just wear the 15% longer to achieve the same result.. Individuals with sensitive teeth are recommended to use the 15% gel. This is a great way to whiten those of us who have habits of coffee, tea, soda, wine, dark juices, etc. Anything that stains a white shirt will stain teeth, but these are just the typical culprits. Once you have the custom made trays, you can keep them forever and touch up for a very reasonable price. Each syringe of gel costs $15 and they can be purchased in office. With this whitening method, individuals will get similar results to the Tres White method; usually 5-6 shades as an average.
ZOOM
Zoom is the whitening system that you have seen on TV on the Extreme Makeover show. It is an in-office whitening treatment that will run $375 for the Zoom session alone, and an extra $160 if the custom made trays are desired to touch up afterwards. The procedure is about two hours from the time you sit down, until you walk out the door. Cheek retractors are placed in the mouth, along with a series of gel to seal out the gum tissue. The whitening gel is then placed on the teeth and there are 3, 15 minute sessions where a light will shine on this gel. In between each session, the gel will be suctioned off, an enhancer solution placed on the teeth, and then gel placed back on the teeth. The excellent thing about this system is that the results are immediate. You come in with your smile, and walk out with whiter teeth. After this procedure, we adives to avoid foods/drinks/habits that have a lot of color in them for 48 hours. The teeth are more absorptive during this time and can pick up stain more easily. We tell people to "think white." Recommendations are pasta with alfredo sauce, chicken without skin, light yogarts or cheeses, baked potato, sprtie as your soda, etc. The average person with alot of stain, can whiten up to 9 shades. The results are obviously different on everyone. Those with alot of stain will see great results and significant changes. Those whose teeth are only slightly stained, will not see as dramatic of a result. Brightsmile is another in office whitenting session that is similar to Zoom. The charge for Brightsmile is $600, with $50-$100 off offered a few times a year by Brightsmile.

Tooth sensitivity is a side effect of whitening, no matter if you use the over the counter method, or in office method. Obviously in office, we try to take all precautions to minimize this sensitivity. The tooth sensitivity typically only lasts during the whitening process itself and about 24 hours after the whitening is stopped. It is NOT permenant. If you are very sensitive and whitening is important to you, we advise using a sensitivity toothpaste in conjunction with an over the counter fluoride rinse (ACt, Fluoriguard) for a week before beginning the whitening procedue. This may help minimize some of the sensitivity that one may have.
